Every business

Some businesses are assembled on purpose. Most simply accumulate, one tool at a time, until habits form and the work bends around them. We design and build custom business tools and systems for owner-run companies: one connected place to run the work, assembled from the parts a business actually needs and shaped around the people already doing it.

§ 1What happens here?

We work the way an architect does. Before the shape, before the materials, there is one question: what happens here?

A business is really the sum of wherever its work happens, and most of those corners were never designed. The answer to what happens here? decides everything that gets built. Once it is clear, the components almost choose themselves.

§ 2Recognition

You already know where it snags.

Recognition comes before any recommendation. Most owners can point straight to where the work stalls or glitches. Mark what sounds familiar to you.

These are plates from the field guide, each drawn from real work we assembled around the people doing it. Read them as evidence rather than case studies; the larger idea emerges through the examples.

Plate I
Real Estate Developer Assemblya place each client can see their own project whole

A developer is building a multi-home project for clients scattered across the country. Each opens their own portal and finds the project whole: progress on their specific home, photographs, selections, approvals, invoices, and every conversation, arranged the way it was promised.

Patient Advocacy Assemblya place where a life’s records can be found

A patient advocate builds evidence-based packets and advocacy strategies for people facing rare diagnoses. What once meant days of pouring through research for every new client now assembles quickly through a custom studio, so a newly diagnosed family receives a thorough, personalized packet within hours.

A novelist writing complex place-based fiction had years of it scattered: research, interviews, historical documents, photographs, maps, timelines, and evolving drafts. Now every piece lives in one connected workspace, cross-referenced and searchable, so a book holds together at a scale no one person could keep in their head.

Remembering the natural history of the place had become part of the writing challenge. The assembly took that part off the table.

Wedding Design Assemblya place where each wedding is designed like a publication

Each wedding is designed like a magazine: through client intake and site analysis, and with an editorial point of view, design direction, and vendor documentation, gathered into one practice. What lived only in the designer’s judgment now has a place to be worked out and memorialized, so every couple ends with clearer direction and a keepsake design book.

Geospatial Analysis Assemblya place a report can be produced the same way twice

A geospatial firm repeated the same sequence on nearly every project: research, data preparation, interpretation, mapping, report production, and client communication. Now the datasets, mapping workflows, standard structures, and quality checks sit in one production line, so a brief comes out faster and consistent, with their expert judgment saved for what actually needs interpreting for the client.

As the projects multiplied, keeping it all straight started competing with time at the bench. Now every project lives in one workspace shaped around how the team actually works.

An assembly adds up to one connected place where the business runs, built to fit how the work already happens and to hold together as it grows. Every assembly is different, so treat this as a short sample of the materials one can be made from; yours will use its own set, chosen because they belong.

§ 6Method

How an assembly gets built.

The work determines the components. The components become the assembly. The assembly is the product.

01 · Discovery

Read the evidence.

Businesses leave evidence of how they actually work. We study the repeated questions, misplaced information, hand-built documents, workarounds, and tasks that keep returning to one person. Some of that evidence sits outside the business: what AI assistants say when a customer asks them to recommend someone is a matter of record, and it is seldom what an owner expects. We are also watching for what has quietly become possible for a business like this one, which an owner has had little reason to track.

02 · Design

Draw the assembly.

We decide what belongs together, what should disappear, and what the work needs to carry from one moment to the next. What the drawing produces is a single, coherent picture of how the business works, and everything the assembly makes later, the assistants, the documents, the automations, is built from it.

03 · Build

Build around the person.

Some people dictate, some sketch, and some work entirely from a phone on site. The assembly takes its shape from the person doing the work.
