The CRM
Where people, and the next thing owed them, are remembered.
A CRM is where a business keeps its people, and, more importantly, the next thing it owes each of them. It is a memory of relationships: who each person is, what was said, and what happens next.
It exists because relationships outlast transactions and memory drops the thread. The follow-up that never happened, the returning client greeted like a stranger, mark the absence of a place to hold the thread between one conversation and the next.
What changes when it is assembled
The next step is remembered for the owner rather than by the owner. Leads stop leaking out the bottom. Past clients get the follow-up on time. A new person can pick up a relationship without the history living in one head.
Used well it disappears into the work. No one “does the CRM.” The record simply keeps, so that attention can go to the person instead of to remembering the person.
A returning client, greeted like a first-timer, because the one person who knew them was out that day.
