A dashboard is a view of the work, drawn from where the work already lives. It is a window onto the places that are already current, so the state of a business can be seen without asking anyone. It adds no new place to keep up to date; it only reflects the ones that are.
It exists because owners lose the overview. The work is happening in many places at once, and “how are we doing” becomes a question answered by interrupting people until a picture forms.
What changes when it is assembled
The view assembles itself from the real work. Open jobs, what is late, what is done, visible at a glance and drawn rather than re-entered. The weekly meeting to reconstruct the obvious can end.
A dashboard is only as honest as its sources. It reflects an assembly rather than substituting for one. Built on top of scattered work, it simply shows the scatter faster.
