The Knowledge Library

Where a business stops remembering and starts finding.

Every business keeps a record of how it works. Usually that record is a person. The knowledge library is where it becomes something findable instead: specifications, product data, past decisions, the answer to “how did we do that last time.”

It exists because memory does not scale and does not stay. The knowledge that lives in one head arrived there because remembering was faster, at the time, than writing it down. The cost shows up later, on the day that head is unreachable and the work stops at the question.

What changes when it is assembled

A library moves the search from the person to a place anyone can reach. It leaves judgment untouched, which is the actual product, and relieves the owner of being the index. It also becomes the ground the other materials stand on: the assistant answers from it, the website reflects it, the proposals borrow their language from it.

The measure is quiet. The owner is interrupted less. A new hire ramps in weeks. A question asked on a Tuesday gets answered whether or not one specific person picked up.

Field note

The owner is usually the search engine. A library is the first material that changes that.
