The Website

The public face of an assembly, kept current with the work behind it.

A website is the first place most people meet a business, and often the last place the business updates. Inside an assembly it is the public face: the part of the work that faces outward, and the part most likely to drift out of date while everything behind it moves on.

It exists because a business is judged before it is met. The site is doing its job whether or not anyone maintains it, which is exactly the problem. A page written three years ago keeps describing a business that no longer exists, in a voice the owner has outgrown, listing work they no longer do.

What changes when it is assembled

In an assembly the website stops being a brochure that ages on its own. It draws from the same knowledge the business already keeps, so a change made once is a change shown everywhere. The site becomes a view of the current business rather than a monument to an earlier one.

That is the whole shift. A website is a surface that should always agree with the work. When it is wired to the material behind it, agreement becomes the default, rather than a chore someone keeps forgetting.

Field note

A site untouched in three years, describing a business that had changed twice since. The owner had stopped looking at it, which is how it stayed wrong.
